Over the weekend the issue of the Oscar excluding people of colour from its list for the second year in a row became the most controversial of issues. With Jada Pinkett Smith pouring out her discontent, and Spike Lee politely refusing to be part of this year’s Award.
Another celebrity to join words to the #OscarSoWhite controversy is Lupita Nyong’o, who won the award back in 2014. According to her:
“I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Award nominations,” said Lupita. “It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture. The Awards should not dictate the terms of art in modern society, but rather be a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today.”
She added, “I am standing with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them.”
